Twining means becoming an Aniimo you have collected and using its abilities to explore and fight. If you wonder why collecting a creature matters beyond its combat stats, this is the system to understand first. Official Twine overview.

Think about who you are controlling

In the Gamescom 2025 demonstration, Twining let the player control an Aniimo directly in real-time combat instead of issuing commands to it. The distinction is commanding your companion versus moving and acting as that companion. Xbox Wire's Twining demonstration.

That changes what you should compare. Before choosing a companion for an outing, say what you want to do: gain height, move faster, or try a particular ability. Then look for that effect, rather than starting with whichever portrait looks strongest.

Try thinking through Budclaw's Tunnel

Basic Budclaw's Tunnel offers protection from ranged attacks while consuming stamina. Pound skills can still launch it out of the ground. That makes it a response to a particular threat, not an invulnerability button. Budclaw's official skill description.

Situation How to approach it
Ranged attacks are the problem Consider Tunnel for its stated ranged protection
Your stamina is running low Do not plan to remain underground indefinitely
A Pound skill knocks you out Change the response to that attack; Tunnel does not protect against everything

This is the useful habit to carry into Twining: match the ability to the problem and keep its exception in mind. For movement choices such as jumping or faster travel, continue with the exploration guide.

Keep Twining, forms and evolution separate

  • Twining: which companion are you becoming?
  • Form: which named version of that companion are you comparing?
  • Evolution family: which named creatures are connected in its family?

Emberpup has its own form entries, while Flameruff appears as another creature in the family. Selecting a form in the Dex is a comparison tool, not an instruction for transforming or evolving a companion in the game. Emberpup's forms and family.

If a family link takes you to another creature, return to your intended form before comparing its abilities. Otherwise, you may end up choosing an effect that belongs to a different companion.

Finish with one useful choice

Write down the creature and form, the desired effect, and any stated limit. For Basic Budclaw, the note could be “Tunnel for ranged attacks; watch stamina and Pound skills.” That is more useful than remembering only the skill icon.

Your choice is ready when the effect matches the job. It does not need to be a best-in-slot ranking. If collecting the companion comes next, head to the catching guide; if you are comparing variants, open the forms guide.
